Mecca Bingo has been associated with efforts to raise funds for Mecca Wheel Difference Campaign to support young people on wheel chair in partnership with Whizz-Kidz. The site now has a special page dedicated to their fundraising activities for Whizz-Kidz, called ‘Dave Will Do It!’ As the heading of the page suggests, Bingo Dave will stop at nothing to get the funds going for Mecca’s favourite charity. Each month Bingo Dave is going to perform an outlandish task and Mecca Bingo will document his antics for their players.
Last month Bingo Dave did something absolutely bizarre like getting his legs waxed. It could not have been a pleasant experience but Bingo Dave went through it, gripping a wooden spoon between his teeth to keep him from screaming. Go see the pictures. If you like the effort Bingo Dave is making towards this cause and think that it is worth it then Mecca Bingo would like you to contribute towards the cause. Bingo Dave has a ‘just giving’ charity page where it is possible to sponsor him and all money will go to the Mecca Bingo Wheel Difference Campaign. The funds raised will provide essential mobility equipment, advice and training for disabled children and their families across the UK. Of course Bingo Dave isn’t the only person at Mecca Bingo who has done his personal bit for the Whizz-Kidz charity. It was reported that Chief Executive of the whole Rank Group including Mecca Bingo, Ian Burke has also done his bit. Mr Burke participated in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour in South Africa in March this year, raising a total of £20,000 for his part in the 109km race which took him more than five hours to finish the tour .
If you wish to support Bingo Dave and Mecca Bingo in their campaign to raise money for Whizz-Kids then please visit www.justgiving.com/bingodave

Mecca Bingo has launched a new campaign to convert old coins and left over foreign coins from a holiday into much needed funds for young wheelchair users. The fund raising campaign is called ‘The Currency for Kidz scheme’ and aims at encouraging people to bring any old or foreign coins to the bingo clubs at Brookdale Place, Chester or Marina Drive, Ellesmere Port the club. These coins will then be donated to Mecca’s charity of the year, Whizz-Kidz.
Bernie Dullaghan the general manager of Mecca Harlow said: “Whenever you come back from a summer holiday it always seems like you have a pocket full of leftover foreign coins. The banks won’t take them but, until the end of September, we’re accepting any foreign or old coins as a donation for Whizz-Kidz – all money raised will go to deserving kids in the region.”
Indeed, this is a novel way of getting rid of foreign coins picked up on trips abroad and at the same time you are doing your bit for a wonderful cause. Your little help will go a long way to support the independence of young wheelchair-users in local communities.
Ruth Owen, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the enthusiasm and inventiveness of all Mecca Bingo team and club members in raising money to support young wheelchair-users’ independence.” She further appealed: “Disabled children stand virtually no chance of getting a powered wheelchair on the NHS. Through Mecca Bingo’s funding of powered and manual wheelchairs and training, more children now have the opportunities previously denied them. Please help us raise even more money to make real differences to young lives.”
Mecca Bingo has been dedicated to fundraising for young wheelchair-users in local communities. Last year Mecca raised more than £280,000 for Whizz-Kidz. The fundraisers are confident of much more in 2009. Visit the Mecca Bingo site to learn more.

Mecca Bingo has been fundraising for a wonderful cause – to help young wheelchair users to be mobile. The site in partnership Whizz-Kidz - a charity for helping disabled children to lead a more independent life, has come up with a novel idea that will turn peoples’ unwanted mobile phones into cash and the money in turn will support the independence of young wheelchair-users in local communities.
The fund raising venture appropriately termed ‘Mobiles for Mobility’ requests people to bring their old mobile phones into Mecca bingo clubs any where in the UK, and the recycled funds-raised goes to Whizz-Kidz. As spokesperson for Mecca Bingo said: “The Charity partnership with Whizz-Kidz is something we’re really proud of at Mecca as the feedback from both team members and customers has been extremely positive. National campaigns such as Mobiles for Mobility are a great way to bring all of the clubs together to work towards a common goal but at the same time make a difference to the local communities in which we operate.”
Chief Executive of Whizz-Kidz, Ruth Owen, added: “We are absolutely thrilled with the enthusiasm and inventiveness of all Mecca team and club members. She added that disabled children stand virtually no chance of getting a powered wheelchair on the national health scheme and now this will be possible through Mecca Bingo’s funding of powered and manual wheelchairs and training. More children now have the opportunities previously denied them.
As part of the ‘Mecca Wheel Difference’ campaign, Mecca clubs across the UK had managed to raise over £286,000 in 2008. Well done Mecca Bingo! The fundraisers are confident that they will definitely achieve the same level of success in 2009 and continue to make a real difference to young lives so that they can lead an active childhood.

Bingo Birthday greetings to Sally Melia our star Mecca Bingo player from Knotty Ash in Liverpool. She turned 103 and celebrated her birthday in true bingo style when friends and staff threw a surprise party complete with hundreds of cards, a cake, and balloons at her local Mecca Bingo club. Sally has been a regular at the Liverpool club since she was 60 years old and can easily claim to be the oldest known bingo regular in the Mecca Bingo group.
Sally was born in 1906, and worked in her youth for tailors Roberts and Bromley, and during the war s at a Royal Ordnance factory. She retired at 65 in 1971 as a school cook. Sally has lived through two world wars and raised seven children, ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She has been a member of the bingo hall in East Prescot Road, Knotty Ash for 43 years.
Sally has been visiting the Mecca bingo club once a week. “She looks forward to her bingo every Saturday”, said her son Bill who accompanies her on these visits. The manager of Mecca Bingo club, Steve Linder added: “Sally is as fit as a fiddle and more active than some people 30 years her junior, she is the queen of this bingo hall and deserves to be treated like Royalty.”
Here is what the birthday girl and the celebrity Mecca bingo player has to say about her favourite activity: ” I don’t know what I would do if I could not get down to the bingo, it keeps me active and you meet some lovely people. One of these days I’m sure I will land the big Jackpot”. Now that one spirited bingo player.

You must have been following the story on the I’m Backing Bingo” campaign to fight against UK government’s decision to continue with the 22% bingo tax . Bingo halls are worried that If the bingo tax increases above 15 percent then their clubs may get closed. The amendment to lower the tax rate from 22 percent to 15 percent was outvoted by the Parliament during the last week.
This decision continues to be meet with determined protests from Bingo hall enthusiasts. A a part of the ongoing protest, as reported by the Daily Star newspaper, a group of bingo fans uniquely expressed their anger and disappointment at the Government. They apparently knitted “voodoo” dolls representing Alistar Darling’s face as he hiked the tax on their favourite game and then fixed sharp pins into voodoo dolls. This was carried by the member s of the Chester Bingo club members. In this context Margaret Knowles, 73, said: “Alistair Darling is stabbing people in the back. Now we want him to know how it feels.” About 90 bingo clubs have closed in Britain in the last three years and Margaret fears theirs could be next. Bingo fans simply wants the government to “Keep bingo tax at 15%, the same as other forms of gaming such as the football pools, the bookies and online bingo and casinos and fail to understand why bingo halls are being singled out for a tax hike.
Bingo is one of the oldest games in the world and a favourite pastime across the UK played both at land bingo halls and online site both of which double up as social. Closing down Bingo halls /sites would also put an end to a popular form of social interaction.
As you must be knowing, leading this protest is non other than Mecca Bingo the UK’s leading bingo provider . To affirm your support for this cause do visit http://www.backbingo.com/
