Bingo, your favourite game, was originally called beano. It was so named because players originally kept their scores by using beans. It was played at country fairs. The dealer would pull a numbered disc out of a cigar box, and then call out the number on the disc. The winner would shout out “beano!” instead of what we are now used to – “bingo!”

A New York toy salesman heard a player in Atlanta, Georgia, shout out “bingo” instead of “beano”. This salesman, Edwin Lowe simply thought that it was a better name, and so was. It has entered the English language, and we have stuck with it until today!
